of internal medicine. I began practice in Denison, Texas
in 1978, and moved to Pueblo in 1992, where I practiced
with Heritage Medical Group until my retirement at the
end of September of this year. I am a Kansas native and
alumnus of the University of Kansas, where I received
my Bachelor of Arts in English in 1971, and my M. D. In
1974. My residency from 1975 to 1978 was in Internal
Medicine at the Wichita branch of the University of
Kansas School of Medicine. I am board certified in
Internal Medicine.
My interest in art started seriously in the mid 1980s. I
saw a very inspiring Winslow Homer watercolor exhibit
at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and felt
that watercolors were where I needed to focus my
efforts. I took classes from Ernie Haring, a signature
member of the Southwest Watercolor Society for two
years, and I was hooked. I got involved with the Pueblo
Art Guild and entered may shows over the last ten years,
and have won several awards, including a 1st place for
an abstract mixed media piece, when Kim Mackey was
the juror.
Since being in Pueblo, I have taken classes from Joni
Giarratano and David Throndson. Having a full time
practice limited the time I could devote to my painting,
but now in retirement, I feel I can devote a good portion
of my time to it. I have had the good fortune to do a lot
of traveling in the last twenty years, and my travels have
been an inspiration for a lot of my paintings. My children
all went to school and/ or lived in Europe, and so I got to
see a lot of great art in the course of visiting them.
My major medium is watercolors, but I also do works in
acrylic. Landscape is my first area of interest, but I
enjoy breaking loose into abstracts occasionally as well.
The artists I have studied the most and who influence my
work are J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper,
Mark Rothko,Andrew Wyeth, Birger Sandzen, and the
French Impressionists, mostly Monet and Cezanne.
I work primarily from photographs, but I carry a small
palette and sketch book with me on all my travels, and
do a lot of plein air work as well. I plan to base my
retirement in Pueblo, as it has a diverse, talented art
community, and is a reasonable and inexpensive place to
live.
